@CNN: JUST IN: First lady Melania Trump arrived at the State of the Union address separately from the President, a break in a longstanding tradition.
First Lady Melania Trump arrived at the Capitol without her husband for Tuesday's State of the Union address, opting to travel with guests she invited to the speech over President Trump.
The arrival raised eyebrows coming on the heels of the first lady scrapping announced plans to travel with the president to Switzerland last week, opting to stay stateside and visit a museum alone. Melania Trump has kept a notably low public profile since the Wall Street Journal reported earlier this month about an alleged payoff to a former porn star who had claimed to have had an affair with Donald Trump.
The first lady's spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, described her State of the Union travel plans as "honoring her guests for the true heroes they are."
"In addition to holding a White House reception and photo opportunity for them, along with their friends and family, she accompanied them to the Capitol," Grisham said. "The first lady and Mrs. (Karen) Pence are now hosting a more intimate meet-and-greet to engage with them on a personal level before the speech."
